Vegetarians

Alain Indria of Lombardia as a vegetarian

I wasn't born a vegetarian. I started out life on breast milk, then progressed to sour dough bread and by my 15th birthday I was crazy about steak.

At the age of 15 I got my first girlfriend, and in order to impress her, I brashly told her I was a windsurfer. Adolescent talk, of course. So I had to learn how to surf in double-quick time.

How I became a vegetarian

I was in my element on my surfboard, and windsurfing became my passion for the next 15 years. My coach advised me to stop eating red meat, to prevent muscle acidification. I soon discovered that I could surf longer in the breakers and that had been my only dream! This diet still didn't make me a vegetarian but little by little I ate less meat, and since I was doing water sports virtually every day, I also stopped eating fish.

Vegetarians

My edifying surfing trips to Tarifa, Maui and California made me into the veteran vegetarian and vegan that I am today.

Nowadays I still find natural and healthy food of the utmost importance. I am a flexitarian (vegetarian, beasty and vegan), who likes experimenting with flavours and really loves eating! I'm not a difficult dinner guest and I eat what's in front of me (well almost - everything except ragout, stew and real chunks of meat)!

New vegetarians according to Alain Indria

The new vegetarian is worried about his own carbon footprint. He is concerned about CO2 emissions resulting from the production and transportation of his food.

The new vegetarians would rather eat locally-sourced and seasonal products. Apples from an orchard planted right next to the E313 are not really what they had in mind, but the new vegetarians have to start somewhere!
