Lombardia's idea of healthy eating

Cooking is a life skill. And eating is one of the most enjoyable things in life. But we sometimes forget that. For some folk, eating is a miserable experience, a means to a certain end. Healthy dieting is not about extremes of "that's allowed' and "that's not.' It's about finding a healthy balance and eating a varied diet with sufficient fruit and veg for your body.

Origins of the word diet

The earliest recorded written use of the word diet is the following:

diete: "What one eats every day' dating from the 15th century

In the 16th century the following information was found about diet:

't Is so ghesont op zijn juyste dyeet te leven' translated as "it is really healthy to eat and drink the correct quantities every day'

The word diet comes from the Latin "diaeta' meaning diet, mode of life.

It also stems from the Greek dìaita meaning "way of life' and, since Hippocrates, diet has also been associated with "mode of life for a sick person as regards digestion and drink'. The Greek word is controversial in origin.
